On that date, Major Maultsby led his flight to attack hostile anti-aircraft gun positions which were causing grievous losses to friendly aircraft operating in their area. Major Maultsby relentlessly attacked and destroyed the hostile positions in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire. His courageous actions and aerial skill resulted in neutralization of a serious threat to friendly air operations. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Maultsby has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. AWARDED FOR ACTIONSDURING Vietnam War Service: Air Force GENERAL ORDERS: CITATION: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel Charles Wayne Maultsby (AFSN: 0-1910993), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States, culminating in 1977. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Maultsby culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and his dedicated contributions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army. Distinguished Flying Cross AWARDED FOR ACTIONSDURING Cold War Service: Air Force GENERAL ORDERS: Department of the Air Force, Special Orders G-18 (1961) CITATION: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Charles Wayne Maultsby (AFSN: 0-1910993), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in aerobatic demonstration flights from 28 October 1959 to 19 December 1959. During this period, as a member of the United States Air Force Air Demonstration Team, "Thunderbirds", Captain Maultsby performed thirty-one precision formation aerobatic exhibitions before an estimated four and one half million people. In completing this unprecedented and extremely demanding schedule of aerial exhibitions, Captain Maultsby demonstrated exceptional airmanship, team discipline and untiring devotion to duty, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. On that date, Captain Maultsby successfully completed a mission of grave national and international significance by piloting an unarmed aircraft over hostile target areas to obtain information of vital importance to the security of the United States. Maultsby (AFSN: 0-1910993), United States Air Force, was captured by communist forces after he was shot down over North Korea on 5 January 1952, and was held as a Prisoner of War until his release on 1 September 1953, during Operation Big Switch at the end of the war.
