But people is calm now.” - Facebook comment on CNN article Russians living near the Ural Mountains were in for a terrifying surprise yesterday evening (Friday morning, locally) on Valentines Day, February 14th, when a meteor zoomed through the sky and exploded overhead, causing windows to break and hundreds to be injured (last count, 725). So far, 270 buildings are damaged. Fortunately the vast majority of injuries appear to be non life-threatening. From CNN.com: Amateur video footage showed a bright white streak moving rapidly across the sky, before exploding with an even brighter flash and a deafening bang. The explosion occurred about 9:20 a.m. local time, as many people were out and about. The national space agency, Roscosmos, said scientists believed one meteoroid had entered the atmosphere, where it burned and disintegrated into fragments, according to RIA Novosti.… The resulting meteorites are believed to be scattered across three regions of Russia, one of them Chelyabinsk, as well as neighboring Kazakhstan, the news agency said. One large chunk was discovered in a lake in the Chelyabinsk region, RIA Novosti cited the Chelyabinsk governor as saying. The difference is though that the one that hit the dinsoaurs hit the earth from behind, like a car rear ending another car that is moving. The movement of the car that was hit meant it rolled with the hit and so reduced the force of impact. ISON on the other hand is one of about 12 (amongst thousnands and thousands of meteors) that is actually travelling in an opposing orbit from earth so if it hit the earth it would hit it like two trains crashing into each other head on from opposite direction of the track. There would be no rolling with the punch lessing of the force of impact so it would actually be far worse than the one that hit the dinosaurs. It won’t hit the earth though. The issue is that it was only discovered four months ago and if it had been going to hit the earth rather than pass by it we would only have had a year left to live and there would have been absolutely nothing we could have done about it. All the astronomers are saying it wasn’t and that it was just a coincidence as they all came from different directions. What this amazing coincidence means (especially in the context of our knowing that we are also going to be passed by large meteors both in March and in September-December) is that we might just be entering into a part of space that is, like the asteroid belt, just full of meteors compared to other parts of space. The Russian and Cuban ones were both unpredicted surprises so we will just have to wait and see if we do seem to start getting more of them than we are used to. Before 2005, the average for a big meteor (a bolide) was 1.2 per day and it had been that way for the last 100 years. However, after 2005, bolides have increased to a level of 5.03 per day as of last July. I’m not sure what it is now. It could be over 6 per day.
