Weird conspiracy theories surrounding the sinking of RMS TitanicBy Benjamen Judd|7 years ago  On the early hours of April 15, 1912, The RMS Titanic sank beneath the waves of the North Atlantic Ocean, four days after setting sail from Southampton, England. More than 1500 people lost their lives in the disaster – one of the biggest in peacetime maritime history.  It's well documented how the sinking of White Star Line's "unsinkable" ship was caused after it crashed into a giant iceberg. But like any horrific or major event that leaves a lasting impact on the human psyche – 9/11; the assassination of JFK; even the death of Diana Spencer – a mythology of conspiracy theories has developed around the tragedy. The most common states that it wasn't the RMS Titanic that sank at all, but another ship entirely: the RMS Olympic. Switch and sink (and claim) In 1998, Robin Gardiner released his controversial book Titanic: The Ship That Never Sank?. In it, Gardiner suggested that the owners of the Titanic, the International Mercantile Marine Group (IMMG), controlled by American financier J.P. Morgan, did an ol' switcheroo before the ship was meant to set sail in what would be one of the biggest and deadliest insurance scams in history. According to Gardiner, the Olympic, which was almost identical to the Titanic, had previously been involved in a collision with the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Hawke, effectively putting it out of work while it was repaired. And because the collision was deemed the OIympic's fault, insurers Lloyd's of London allegedly refused to pay out White Star's claim. Gardiner proposed that the damaged Olympic was quickly patched-up and converted to become the Titanic, in order to make sure that at least one vessel would start earning money. The ship's captain, after being persuaded not to reduce speed, supposedly then deliberately directed the Olympic into an area teeming with icebergs with the aim that the ship would sustain enough damage to warrant a settlement. Torpedoed Another, albeit rather obscure, theory was that the Titanic was torpedoed by a German U-boat. This bizarre idea was fuelled by reports that four explosions were heard deep in the Titanic after it hit the iceberg, conceivably being torpedoes launched by a German submarine. As to why the Titanic was targeted, like the switching out for the Olympic, it was apparently to collect on the insurance policy. The U-boat commander, who had agreed to take part in the plot, was reportedly related to one of the Titanic’s owners. Mariner David "Davey" Blair was a British merchant seaman with the White Star Line who had been hired to sail with the Titanic. However, he was reposted shortly before launch and in his hasty departure from the ship, Blair took the keys to the binocular case with him. Binoculars that would have, in theory, helped the lookouts spot the iceberg. The beginning of the Federal Reserve It was no secret that the Titanic was built to lure in the world's richest guests and among those to be on board for its maiden voyage were John Jacob Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim, Isador Strauss, and George Dunton Widene. As the theory goes, these four incredibly wealthy gents were opposed to the creation of the Federal Reserve Bank. Seeing a quick solution, financier J.P Morgan (with some help from fellow banking cartels the Rothschilds and Rockefellers) chose to kill four stones with one 'berg. The Federal Reserve was opened one year later. The curse of the mummy The most outlandish theory, however, lies with the idea that the Titanic sank because of an ancient Egyptian curse. On board the ship was Lord Canterville, a historian who was travelling with a sarcophagus containing the mummy of an Egyptian priestess of Ammon-Ra. Because of its value, the sarcophagus was placed near the bridge as opposed to the cargo hold. This proximity allowed the long-dead priestess to affect Captain Smith's reasoning, causing him to dismiss the warnings of ice and to slow down.
