(and worse still, they are second-hand Anglicizations). One of the problems with the word misrendered “Gentile” is that it is not a proper noun but a generic, collective noun. It should not be translated “Gentile” (a misleading word), and should NEVER be used in reference to a single individual because the word exists only as a collective noun. (This difference can be understood by realizing the distinction between the words person and people. Clearly the world person is an individual noun; while people is a collective noun (which itself can also exist in the plural; for example, many peoples). In Hebrew, the word mistranslated “Gentile” is gowy (singular) [#1484 (ETH-nos)] or ethne (plural). The problem appears to have arisen with the Latin Vulgate in which these Hebrew and Greek words were rendered into Latin as gentilis, from which we were unfortunate enough to be given the new and inaccurate English word “Gentile.” A similar miscarriage of “translation” occurred with the word “jew.” Most people erroneously think the word “Gentile” means, anyone who is not a “jew.” To the contrary, the words “goy” and “ethne” (improperly rendered “Gentile”) are generic nouns with no distinct racial racial connotation whatsoever. These words simply mean “nation” or “people.” These words should never be translated as heathen: that meaning can only be implied through context. Further, “goy” and “ethne” are collective nouns: One individual cannot constitute a “Gentile”, even as one individual cannot be referred to as a people. -There can only be one group of people (who are Gentile), or different groups of people (who constitute Gentiles); that is, if “Gentile” is to be used to convey the true meaning of “goy” and “ethnos.” Since the word “Gentile” is misleading and inaccurate, it should be discarded. Even as the words “goy” and ethnos” cannot refer to a single individual but only to a group, so also these words cannot categorically refer to any single race of people exclusively (i.e., only “non-jews”). For example, if you and I were Germans visiting China, the Chinese could refer to us as goy/ethnos (if thet were speaking ancient Hebrew or Greek). If two Frenchmen also accompanied us, the Chinese could refer to us all as goyim/ethne. Likewise, if a few Chinamen visited us in our native Germany, we also would refer to them all as goy/ethnos; if two Japanese accompanied these Chinamen, we would refer to them all as goyim/ethne. Goy and ethnos are generic terms meaning simply “people” or “nation.” Whether these words refer to natives (of one’s own race, or of another race) must be determined from the context of any given biblical passage. It should be understood by all that the word “flock” cannot refer to one sheep, but only to a group of sheep. Further, it hsould be understood by all that the word flock cannot be used exclusively in reference to sheep alone, to the exclusion of all other forms of animal life: for it can also be used in reference to goats, ducks, geese, etc. In fact, in Scripture, the main Hebrew words used for cattle [#4735 (mik-NEH); #6629 (tsone); #7716 (seh)] themselves do not mean “cows” exclusively but can be used of any form of livestock: cows, sheep, goats, rams, etc. Interestingly enough, the Hebrew word “goy” can also refer to a troop of animals or a flight of locusts; although to my knowledge it is not used this way anywhere in Scripture. The “jews” have taught us that goyim (“Gentiles”) means “non-jews.” Whether they have lied to us or actually believe this is irrelevant. If they actually believe this themselves, then it is clear that they do not even understand the true Hebrew tongue, the original language of God’s Israel people.
