The first part of the series ended on a low and sour note for her character, with her father stealing her promotion in the end and whatnot. Before heading into the sequel of the adult animated workplace comedy and science fiction series, we need to go back and revisit the memories of the first outing because, like Reagan, we don’t want anyone meddling with them and twisting things out for us. Let’s jump into all the stories shared over the last season, starring Clark Duke, Brett Gelman, Christian Slater, John DiMaggio, Tisha Campbell, and more, in 3…2…1! Netflix describes the series as follows: Lizard people? Real. The moon landing? Fake. Managing the world’s conspiracies is a full-time job for an awkward genius and her dysfunctional co-workers. Inside Job Part 1 Recap Shion Takeuchi’s Netflix creation of 2021 proved that Illuminati is, in fact, real, at least in the alternate universe of animation, along with a functioning shadow government led by Cognito Inc. As far as the team’s personalities are concerned, the socially awkward Reagan (Caplan) plays the bad cop, and Brett, the new, inexperienced, but likable recruit, plays the good one. Together they co-lead the new era of the company along with the rest of their team that eventually becomes ‘The Gang’ including Magic Myc – the octopus (Gelman), Glenn Dolphman (DiMaggio), Gigi (Campbell) and Dr. Andre Lee (Bobby Lee). In their world, they “shadow-govern” an America where Avril Lavigne’s clone replaced the real her in 2003, and Madonna is an Iguana. Shape-shifting lizards walk the land, and America’s democracy is merely a staged sitcom for the world to “believe” in and maintain order. At the same time, Cognito Inc. keeps all the dark realities underground with a Shadow Board pushing in its confidential decisions. Reagan’s not a people person and more of an A.I.-tech-savvy genius who can’t compute emotions, but with Brett’s social skills, they both make the ‘Wonder’ team and have each other’s backs in crises. Throughout the season, her inability to match her emotions with the rest of the world continues to be an issue for her. Although she’s fine living her life as it is, society can’t let her have her way, and she has to face ‘social’ ordeals that often misfire. Finding a way to engineer socially acceptable emotional responses and the perfect bot-boyfriend, her robot once again comes to life with a mind of its own, and things end badly for her, all thanks to her “layered,” messed up relationship between her parents. This eventually ends up with her mother marrying herself while her dad renews his liver insurance (to fuel his alcoholism) from Cognito Inc. after being canned from the company. Various situations often lead her to face off against the likes of “armed and uninformed” flat earth believers. You can only imagine the kind of ordeals her team has to deal with if Jeff Bezo was eaten alive by a Kraken during one of the episodes. Coming back to her relationship scenario, which is more of a disaster. She finally finds a man to hook up with, but he turns out to be a secret agent whose path crosses hers again on a mission, thus revealing her self-proclaimed boyfriend’s character as a tad bit insecure and misogynistic. The only way to get rid of him is to ghost him, not in your usual Gen-Z style, but Cognito Inc. style, which requires her to adopt the whole ‘fake your death to avoid getting texts from a man’ protocol. Later, Reagan and Brett take a trip to the Moon, yet another ride for the former to prove herself better than her father, Rand Ridley (Slater). Episode 8 brazenly reveals why President Kennedy dreamt of going to the Moon in 1962 – “to see what space sex was like” and as a result, the astronauts refused to return. The shadow government had to paint the facade of a fake return trip of the astronauts to calm the public while the Moon was “privately declared a hostile nation.” The signal to the rogue community on the Moon was lost thirty years ago, but lucky for Reagan, an unprecedented distress call received by her company allows her to escape her father’s smothering nature. She and Brett are sent on a “near-suicide mission in space,” and it turns out that Buzz Aldrin, the “first – second man to step on the Moon, ” might be her biological father and a tyrannical Moon King. (And you know what? Jimmy Fallon is a “sleeper agent” working for Cognito.) Aldrin knows his way around emotionally manipulating people around him and also happens to be Neil Armstrong’s murderer, planning to shift the Moon’s orbit, thus endangering life on Earth. Yet, thankfully, evil Aldrin’s DNA test doesn’t match Reagan, and despite all her issues with Rand, he’s still her flawed dad. J.R.’s hard work pays off, and he’s promoted to don the ‘Robe’ as one of the members of the Shadow Board, but a security breach jeopardizes Reagan’s shot at promotion as the company’s CEO. More drama unfolds, leaving Reagan in a dilemma compelling her to choose between her father and her ‘Gang,’ which is essentially the only group of friends she’s ever had. Well, did you guess who the mole was? It was neither of the two but her (not so) friendly and indestructible robot companion since childhood – Bear-O (built by her dad), and in a way, it does raise a good point about her being overworked and unhappy with her life of exhaustion. Inside Job Part 1 Ending The last mission requires ‘Team Ridley’ to get inside Reagan’s head, “something that no therapist has been able to do,” Much like real-life conspiracies, her brain is yet another large conspiracy board, threading all the dysfunctionalities of her childhood. And it must be done without delay to find the password to override Bear-O’s system. While Reagan’s in her head, walking through polaroids of her memories, her team discovers her sweet message for them in her lab, and Brett trips into her memories accidentally. The worst comes alive inside her head as the truth behind her repressed emotions explodes. Her father made her out to be his “insurance policy” and a way back into Cognito Inc., thus erasing memories of her only fourth-grade best friend – Orrin, and turning her in the direction of pure scientific achievements. Although she may have lost her then-best friend, her new partner Brett reveals the password as “O R R I N,” and Bear-O is shut down for good after causing much damage to the premises. Reagan kicks her toxic dad out of the house and is ready to assume her post as the new boss of the corporation after receiving some help from Robotus. The maniacal Robo is then brought upstairs and given a bit of an upgrade. J.R.’s frauds are disclosed (hence “black-sited”) by the Shadow Board. Reagan’s problems, however, are far from over. The Shadow Board reinstates her father as the new CEO, owing to his major shares in the company and high experience, and she can’t help but lose it.
