Johnson considered ordering the ship sunk to keep the story of the Israelis attacking a US ship secret, but he was talked out of it by saner aids. The survivors, including those injured in the attack, were ordered under threat of court marshall to remain silent about what really happened. After they were not held accountable for killing nearly 3 dozen American sailors, the Israelis knew that they could do anything to any American without paying the price. The liberty’s captain refused help and the destroyer signaled “I’ll stand by in case you need me.” It stayed and protected it until U.S. vessels arrived many hours later.
