(Vasha Hunt/[email protected])In a recent column he did for Athlon, CBSSports.com and former AL.com writer Jon Solomon made the case that the increasingly national scope of the football rosters at Alabama and Auburn help back up the claim that the Iron Bowl is the nation's most important rivalry.Solomon noted that only 35 percent of Alabama's 2013 roster and 34 percent of Auburn's players last year come from the state of Alabama -- both down significantly from five years ago. Forty-five percent of Auburn's 2013 roster, Solomon notes, came from the recruiting-hotbed states of Florida, Georgia, California and Texas, while 37 percent of Alabama's players last year were from those four states.Breaking down the roster numbers another way, however, tells us more about each team's recruiting. Looking at Alabama's current roster and 2014 recruiting class, 34 players -- 29 percent of what should be its roster in 2014 --  come from outside the deep South, the Crimson Tide's core recruiting states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee and Louisiana. The number is smaller at Auburn, where only 18 players on its current roster and 2014 recruiting class -- or 14 percent -- come from outside that core recruiting area.Georgia makes up a significant share of the Tigers' roster, as its list of current players, 2014 signees and walk-ons includes 38 players from the Peach State, or 30 percent of what should be its 2014 roster. So while we can see that the Iron Bowl is becoming more national through the hometowns of its players, we can also see that Alabama is venturing further afield more often in recruiting than Auburn. And the trend is going more national. Eleven members of its 26-man 2014 recruiting class come from outside the deep South, including signees from Iowa, Minnesota, California, Colorado and Oklahoma.AL.com's Michael Casagrande earlier this week detailed some of the travel involved in pulling that class together.Auburn, meanwhile, is hammering away in talent-rich Georgia, with 11 2014 signees from that state and only one, Olathe, Kan., offensive lineman Braden Smith, from outside the deep South. But in pulling key players like Alex Kozan, Angelo Blackson and Elijah Daniel from places like Colorado, Delaware and Indiana over the last few years, the Tigers have shown they're not afraid to log some flight time as well.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
