Trump had hired an outside team to comb his properties for materials that may be subject to an existing grand jury subpoena in connection with the ongoing investigation that included the Aug. 8 FBI raid on his Mar-a-Lago estate, the Washington Post reported. That team discovered the additional materials, the exact nature of which remains unknown as of press time. The former president has faced intense legal scrutiny amid the investigation, initiated originally at the behest of the National Archives and Records Administration which sought the return of missing documents Trump may have taken from the White House. Trump previously cooperated with the subpoena, allowing the FBI to peruse his estate and voluntarily handed over documents the agents sought, though they later returned to secure more in a high-profile raid. Following Trump's 2024 presidential campaign announcement, the Department of Justice appointed special counsel Jack Smith to handle its investigations involving the former commander-in-chief. Since then, Trump has faced a major legal loss, with an appeals court shutting down both the independent special master review of the documents he requested and previously lifting a stay on the DOJ's own review of the materials. Trump has long derided the DOJ investigation as an act of political persecution and derided the entire situation as part of a broader and seemingly endless "witch hunt" against him.
