Our collections Learn more about the wide variety of physical and digital collections Archival collections The Archives' wide-ranging collections include the records of the University of Manitoba as well as subjects including Prairie Literature, Women's Studies, the Ukrainian Canadian experience, Film and Animation, Food History in Canada, among many other areas. Digital collections UM Digital Collections currently feature over 75,000 digitized items including correspondence, photos, books, newspapers, and film. The Winnipeg Tribune The Winnipeg Tribune, one of western Canada's oldest newspapers, ran from 1890 to 1980. Our collection includes digitized copies of the newspaper as well as over 2,500,000 clippings and 500,000 photographs. Rare books Rare books and various other printed or manuscript materials covering a wide variety of areas are held in Archives & Special Collections. The collection numbers approximately 30,000 volumes and is constantly expanding. University of Manitoba history The Archives holds textual, photographic, cartographic, audio, and video records of university faculties, offices, staff and faculty members. Icelandic collection We have the largest collection of Icelandic materials in Canada and the second largest in North America. Mission and mandateSince its establishment in 1978, the Archives' mission has been to acquire, catalogue and preserve university records and special research collections which further the educational aims of the University of Manitoba, and to promote and provide wide access to them.The Archives' wide-ranging collection mandate includes the acquisition of the records of the University of Manitoba, Canadian Prairie Literary Manuscripts, the Archives of the Agricultural Experience and rare books in the areas of western Canadiana, early Arctic exploration, early Native language syllabics, spiritualism, church history and philosophy, and agriculture among others.
