An eastern Anatolian kingdom on the eastern shore of Lake Van. Originating from a regional collection of principalities first mentioned in the 13th century BCE, it had become a single political entity by the 9th century BCE. Urartu was a powerful rival to the Neo-Assyrian Empire. It ceased to exist sometime in the late 7th or early 6th century BCE.
