These stories are generally loosely based on real-life encounters, such as the Kraken, which is most likely a giant squid, or bigfoot, which could simply be bear sightings in deep woodlands. From UFOs to the Loch Ness Monster, fascinating monsters and their legends have captured our imaginations.
Giants are a monster race that can be found in most civilizations’ legends. Giants are depicted as massive, aggressive beings in stories ranging from “Jack the Giant Killer” to David battling Goliath in the Bible. They are reported to feed on humans or livestock, depending on the myth. Many civilizations utilise giants as an opponent for the hero of the story, exhibiting character strength and wisdom over pure brawn and foolishness.
The History of Giants
In Greek mythology, the term “giant” first appears in 1297, derived from the Gigantes. The Jotun are giants who live throughout the nine planets and oppose the gods in Norse mythology. The Jotun exist in a variety of shapes and sizes, including frost giants (hrmursar), fire giants (eldjötnar), and mountain giants (bergrisar).
While the Norse gods are characterised as human-sized, the giants are their adversaries in numerous conflicts, most famously Ragnarok, the last battle in which the giants attack Asgard (the gods’ abode) and combat the gods until the world is destroyed.
As you can see, giants were strongly entrenched in Norse folklore; the gods were even related to the giants by numerous marriages. The entire Norse human world was said to have been produced from the flesh of Ymir, a cosmic-sized behemoth.
Two giants, a man and a woman, were said to be travelling the fjord at Drangey island at night in Icelandic legend. The sun rose while they were travelling, and the sudden exposure to sunlight turned them to stone, along with their cow, forming the island.
While most stories depict giants as antagonists, such as the popular children’s fairytale “Jack and the Beanstalk,” there are many tales that depict giants as both intelligent and benevolent, most notably in the works of Roald Dahl and Jonathan Swift.
The Kandahar Giant
While giants have always been restricted to old myths, books, and films, a new story has arisen from Kandahar, Afghanistan. While the story is said to have occurred in 2002, it was not publicly publicised until 2016, when a YouTuber called L. A. Marzulli aired an episode of his series ‘Watchers.’
In the episode, a putative military contractor or soldier claimed to have observed a blade-wielding monster murder one of their fellow US special forces members. The surviving troops then shot down the giant, and the giant’s body was placed into a military cargo plane and flown to a clandestine location to be hidden away from the public.
According to the alleged eyewitness, the ‘giant of Kandahar’ was 12-15 feet tall, weighed 1,100 pounds, had crimson hair, and had six fingers instead of five. The witness and his crew were dispatched to a remote location to look for a patrol that had gone AWOL. When they arrived, the giant emerged from a cave holding a massive blade, which he used to stab and murder his friend “Dan.”
Who Exactly is the Kandahar Giant?
To be honest, according to Indie88, the Kandahar Giant is any of the two possibilities listed below.
- A mythological 13-foot-tall gigantic creature who dwelt in Afghanistan’s mountains and was destroyed by US special troops. The authorities later covered up the death of the red-haired, six-fingered giant.
- A total myth.
In August 2016, YouTuber Marzulli posted a lengthy interview with Mr. K, a military contractor, on the internet video sharing platform. During the conversation, Mr. K stated that he was a member of the crew that ruthlessly executed the Kandahar giant.
In the early 2000s, the US forces engaged in violent clashes with the Taliban in Kandahar Province, the Taliban’s de facto capital. However, this enormous beast was no human combatant.

Mr. K described the Kandahar Giant as standing 13 feet tall and having two sets of fangs. With his spear weapon, the monster killed one of the Special Forces soldiers. According to ati, the rest of the soldiers killed him in less than 30 seconds by firing at him nonstop. The army forces then removed its corpse in a Chinook helicopter and have kept it buried ever since, as no one saw him again.
According to other tales, he was as tall as 15 feet with six digits, wore leather moccasins with a horrible odour, and suddenly emerged from a cave and killed one soldier with his spear.

When Snopes inquired about the “Kandahar Giant incident” in 2016, the Department of Defense said, “We do not have any record or information concerning a special forces member slain by a giant in Kandahar.” Furthermore, there was no official statement from their website or a news release stating that a “special forces troop” went missing in Afghanistan or that a monster killed their man.
